The Top 10 Underrated Disney Movies Huffposthuffpost Entry
Okay, everyone. If you already know me, then you're well aware how much of a Disney fan I am. I watched Disney moviesconstantly as a child, and to this day, they are an escape from the crazy stressful world that comes with this newfound "adulthood." However, when I mention some of my most favorite movies that I spent days upon days watching, my friends either have no ideawhat movie I'm referring to, or just flat-out say they never liked it. Soooooo…I present to you:
HALLIE'S DEFINITIVE RANKING OF THE TOP TEN MOST UNDERRATED DISNEY MOVIES OF ALL TIME
(Is the title too long? Nah. Just roll with it.)
10. Peter Pan
Okay, so of all the movies on this list, it's probably the most popular. Everyone claims to love Peter Pan, but it often gets thrown to the side or upstaged by the movie's emotionally unstable sidekick (Tink looks a little too nice in those new movies, doesn't she?). Peter is one of those characters that people romanticize, but often the story and message of the movie gets forgotten. Plus, you guys, nobody I've ever met loves Peter Pan as much as I do, so I'm claiming personal preference on this one (coming from the girl who woke up this morning clutching a Peter plush doll, I feel this is fair).
9. Robin Hood
Ahh, Robin Hood. I distinctly remember having the biggest crush on that character, which is a little worrisome considering he was a fox…but no matter, he was handsome anyways. All the characters in this movie were just so lovable; Little John, Maid Marian, even Prince John was a fun character (at least from the eyes of a 4 year old), and Maid Marian and Robin Hood were definitely my first OTP. And the whole idea of Robin Hood taking care of all those poor little starving animal children?? So noble, although I'm not sure stealing riches from the well-to-do characters was quite thebest topic to tackle in a Disney movie…
8. The Rescuers Down Under
First sequel on the list! Oddly enough, I'm still not sure I've ever seen the original movie, but that made no difference to me when I was little. I was obsessed with this movie, and watched it every time I went to my grandmother's house. I have distinct memories of Wilbur mentioning milk and cookies, to which I always responded by asking my grandmother for milk and cookies, so now every time I think about this movie I crave milk and cookies…it's a vicious cycle. At times, the movie actually got a little too creepy, now that I think about it. A poacher in Australia that kidnaps a child and threatens to feed him to crocodiles? No matter, I was too busy laughing at Frank the lizard as he was looking for the keys.
7. Ratatouille
This is quite possibly one of the most well-written of the movies on the list, and quite a feat by Pixar. For a movie about rats, it's quite inspiring. And it has a great lesson, too. However, I think the public brushed this one off by claiming it wastoogrown up, and I can almost agree with them. But at the time it was released, I was in love with it. It was romantic and adventurous and inspiring all at once, and feels like a bridge between a children's movie and something much more refined.
6. The Fox and the Hound
Not gonna lie, even thinking about this movie makes me want to cry. In fact, I'm not sure I've ever cried more at a movie than I always did at this one. But, other than that one specific scene we're all thinking of, it was such a sweet movie. It mimicked racial issues and social norms, showing that true friendship can stem out of any circumstance, and can survive anything. Also, you're lying if you say you didn't want a dog named Copper after watching that movie. "I'm ahound dog."
5. Brave
I think the hype for this movie outweighed the reaction; most people were expecting it to be more than what it was. Without any prior ideas, though, this movie is stunningly beautiful. The animation alone deservesall the awards. Merida is such a boss of a princess, and someone that every little girl should look up to. She proves that not every princess needs a prince, but that family is not to be forgotten. This movie reminds us that sometimes a mother truly is a girl's best friend.
4. A Bug's Life
Pixar again! A Bug's Life was one of thefunniest movies in my opinion when I was little. I spent most of my first few years quoting my favorite lines from it ("I'm LOST!"). Pixar does a wonderful job creating highly believable characters out of unconventional resources, and A Bug's Life is a perfect example. The problem with A Bug's Life though, was that it was the second of Pixar's full length movies- Toy Story being the first, and it couldn't live up to Woody and Buzz's popularity. But that blooper reel? Killer.
3. Monsters University
Since becoming a college student, my appreciation for this movie has only skyrocketed. I have watched it in common rooms and dorm rooms multiple times, sharing the pure joy that is this movie. I'm not gonna lie, I think I may like it better than the original, and the original isiconic. The reason it made it onto the list is because it's asequel, and apparentlyno one else ever appreciates a good sequel(The Cars sequels do not count). And can we just take a moment to appreciate the camp scene where they scare the living crap out of the troopers? It's truly a beautiful moment.
2. Meet the Robinsons
One of the most forgotten about movies in all of Disney history; Meet the Robinsons. I love this movie for so many reasons, one of them being the Jonas Brothers promotional music video. The characters are quirky, the protagonist is super smart, there's time travel, jazz-singing frogs, and a surprising evil villain. I mean, what else do you need? In its heart, this movie strives to teach us all a good lesson about family and home; the best kind is one that chooses you everyday. "Bake them cookies, Lucille!"
1. Oliver & Company
Once Upon a Time in New York City…Could you possibly have a better opening song? Yeah, didn't think so. But it saddens me thatno one knows about this movie. Turns out, I didn't even own it myself…so I havenoidea how I ended up having such a love for it. But Oliver's character (based on Oliver Twist)is so genuinely sweet and innocent, and is so lovable, just like Jenny, the rich New Yorker who decides to take care of Oliver. And can we take a moment to appreciate "Good Company", the song Jenny sings to Oliver? Oh my gosh. Tears. Tears everywhere. Everyone go watch this movie now, it will change your life.
So, that's the list! If you have any edits, suggestions, or comments, go for it.
